Google Maps has added information on wheelchair accessibility to several major cities around the world, including London, covering the Underground, buses and trams. It's available on the desktop version of Maps and will be added to Android and iOS soon. New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Boston and Mexico City are also included.

Microsoft Ignores Update Blocks

As well as its defective updates, Microsoft recently confessed that it forced the Fall Creator Update (FCU) on to computers which had been set to block it.
Users running windows 10 Pro, which costs 100 quid more than Windows 10 Home (219.99 VAT included), can delay feature updates by up to 365 days.

A detection tool developed by Birmingham University has revealed a big flaw in some of the UK leading banks apps.Researchers at Birmingham University’s School of Computer Science ran a tool to test the security of 400 Android and iOS apps, including many from banks that customers use to check their account and transfer money.They found that several banking apps contained a critical flaw that would let an attacker connected to the same network perform a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, intercepting what’s been sent from the user to the bank. Around 10 million users identified to be at risk.

Trump backtracks on US Russia security

President Trump has backtracked on plans for an ‘impenetrable’ joint cybersecurity unit with Russia after harsh criticism from the fellow Republicans, who said Vladimir Putin couldn’t be trusted.
Trump discussed the idea with Putin in their first face to face meetings at the G20 summit in Homburg, Germany. He suggested it could be used to prevent the hacking of elections, keeping them ‘guarded and safe’.

 

 

 

Beware of the fake Bank Website URLs

Hackers have set up fake URLs for UK banks, using website names that sound genuine in order to trick people into handing over their personal information and login details. Security researchers at Domaintools ( www.domaintools.com) found 346 fake sites, comprising 110 for HSBC, 74 each for Barclays and Standard Chartered, 66 for Natwest and 22 for Lloyds. False URLs run by scammers include www.hsbc-direct.com, www.natwesti.com, www.barclaya.net, www.barclays-supports.com and www.11oydstsbs.com.

Virgin Media has announced the next 30 locations that will receive so-called 'ultra-fast' fibre broadband as part of its Project Lightning scheme. They include Grimethorpe in South Yorkshire, Wargrave
in Berkshire and Llanharry in Rhondda. Virgin says that
by spring 2017 households in those areas will benefit from speeds of 200Mbps, and businesses 300Mbps.

Snap happy! £350 photo-editing software now costs nothing

A powerful photo-editing program that once cost $500 (around £350) is now free for anyone to use. The Nik Collection, which is owned by Google, is a package of seven desktop plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop. It’s one of the best programs of any kind to be made free in recent years.
The plug-ins include tools for improving a photo's colour (see screenshot), for editing photos in black and white, and for applying effects to specific parts of an image. Google bought Nik in 2012, when the software was priced at $500, and was used mainly by professionals.
